Benza Vineyards, located in the Laurelwood Distric

Benza Vineyards, located in the Laurelwood District AVA (a nested AVA of the greater Willamate) is serving wines made from varities that thrive in this area, like Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and, of course, delicious Pinot Noir, much of it souced from estate fruit.

Benza is located at the end of a long rural road and is beloved by locals who cram their small but charming tasting room to relax and chill with Benza’s high-quality wines. Don’t miss the residents of Benza’s on-site chicken coop as well, to complete the laid back, funky farm experience.

Kudos to founder Ron Benza for hanging out with us, providing a tour of the crush-pad and barrel room, and walking us through his plans to expand the tasting room to a lager structure nearby. We’ll be back to check on the progress and to enjoy the wines, particuarly highlights like the 2018 “Three Tuxedos” Estate Pinot, featuring a savory blend of the best barrels that expresses the terrior of this AVA, boosted by its time in 40% new french oak.

HAPPY CABERNET FRANC DAY, 2022! We’re super excited to celebrate this year with Leah Jorgensen Cellars 2021 Le Tourbillon Cabernet Franc, featuring fruit sourced from Washington State’s legendary Red Mountain AVA, from the iconic Kiona Vineyard, no less. This wine is a bright, Loire-inspired expression of 100% Cab Franc that produces a whirlwind (the definition of “Le Tourbillon” in French) of flavor, with bright red fruits like cranberry and raspberry, racy acidity, and mild tannins.

Drink now, and pair it with food as you would with a Gamay, like roast chicken, pork, hanger steak, grilled salmon, shrimp, and cheeses like Chèvre, Neufchâtel, brie, and Gruyère. Cheers, Leah!

We’re always excited to check out Seattle Urban Wineries annual POUR event! Organized by local Somm legend David LeClaire, POUR is an opportunity to experience as many as 21 wineries that produce and / or sell their bottles directly in the greater Seattle area. This event always features fun settings, like this year’s host Club Sur, located in Seattle’s SODO district, who even provided food for purchase to fend off the dreaded Drunchies!

As with every POUR event, you’ll always score a souvenir wine glass, and if you’re looking to buy any of the wines you try, wineries can even sell bottles to take home.

Wine lovers in Tacoma, Washington, know they need not drive hours to wine country for their fix. The Dahlman Cellars tasting room, located around the corner from the historic Stadium High School, is an excellent place to find small-production, family-owned wines made with fruit from some of the best AVA’s in Eastern Washington.

Dahlman Cellars is owned and operated by husband and wife team Jim and Andrea Dahlman. Jim is the Wine Maker, aka “Liquid Happiness Provider” while Andrea is the so-called “Chief of Everything Else”. The Dahlmans invite you into their comfy tasting room to walk you through a tasting that includes a selection of Whites and Reds.

The wines are all delicious, but if we had to recommend one, it would be the 2020 The Actuary ( Double Gold,-96 points-Washington Wine Awards) This is a beautifully balanced wine, a mixture of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cab Franc and Merlot has just the right amount of lively black fruit notes to get the party started but also features rich flavors of olive, baking spice, dark chocolate, and pipe tobacco, with a backbone of manageable tannins. It’s an ASTOUNDINGLY good value at $30, and definitely not the only noteworthy wine in the lineup.

So next time you’re in Tacoma, be sure to swing by Dahlman Cellars and raise a glass to good wine, and tell them that Decanted sent you!
